I Wonder
J. Scott Smith
I wonder, is the bell that when struck
Returns not a sound
In the tower found
When the bell-ringer hears it is stuck?
I wonder, is the 'rang given flight
But then returns not
To the hand that begot
Still carried when the dusk meets the night?
I wonder, is the hawk flying free
That flushes the prey
Then from the fist stays
Kept long for service in falconry?
I wonder, is the dog given scent
Who follows no trail
But instead his tail
Rewarded or to other tasks sent?
I wonder, as I wonder all this
If a friend the same
As these things I name
Would if discarded truly be missed?
