Til the Next Change in the Weather
J. Scott Smith
We met in the chill of October
Children dressed up as ghosts and goblins
And soon enough there was no stoppin'
The way we felt about each other
We married in the chill of April
Children ourselves, a child was coming
Sealed with a simple braided gold ring
By fall it had all fallen down hill
I used to dream of a love that would last forever
But it seems the best I can do
Is try to hold on through
'Til the next change in the weather
In the heat of a mid-summer day
I remember it so very well
I knew I loved you, and I would tell
All my friends you would be mine someday
We wed on Lover's Day, white and red
Soon our home was a little one's zoo
But life's hard when you're young and just two
With five in five summers, we were dead
I used to dream of a love that would last forever
But it seems the best I can do
Is try to hold on through
'Til the next change in the weather
Then one spring I found me finding you
Another chance to do something right
I couldn't help myself and one night
Early in summer I said, "I do"
You said, "I can't stay here anymore"
I said, "But I love you just the same"
You said, "It's not love, it's just a game"
That winter you left just like before
I used to dream of a love that would last forever
But it seems the best I can do
Is try to hold on through
'Til the next change in the weather
I used to dream of a love that would last forever
