I Start Over
J. Scott Smith
At seventeen, too young to know what I didn't know
My life changed
At eighteen, still too young and in over my head
I started over
At twenty-one, with a noose of years around my neck
My life changed
At twenty-three, still too young in spite of the years
I started over
At twenty-five, with a footing of time to stand on
My life changed
At thirty-one, with three lives depending on mine
I started over
At thirty-four, fresh from the reefs of a rugged life
My life changed
At forty-one, a hope grown to love was dashed and then
I started over
At forty-seven, able to take life by the horns
My life changed
At forty-nine, run through by the ravages of life
I started over
At fifty-one, opportunity knocked on my door
And life changes
And fifty-one, perhaps, is the last time it's required
I start over
