To Carla

J. Scott Smith

Forever - a long time by anyone's measure -
we'll be together, though far and long apart.

Remember that time cannot steal the treasure
bound close to the soul by the threads of the heart.

Inquire of your mind, from time to time, my face,
and know that I have required of mine the same.

Embody the face with memories and grace,
and seek for a moment the past to reclaim.

Nurture this time, for the conclusion is nigh,
as circumstance dictates this must be the end.

Dwell on the meaning and purpose of goodbye
when spoken as we have - a friend to a friend.
